From Anise Candy to Zebra Meat...
Welcome Friends!
I'm excited to announce this project to delve into the pages and dishes of my Families' cookbook throughout 2018!
The cookbook was compiled by my Sister, Gretchen, several years ago, from recipes collected from family members near and far, and with as many written recipes as she could get her hands on. In the years prior, my Mom, Dorothy, carefully converted many recipes to standardized measurements, from 'handfulls' and 'dashes', with the help of my late Grandmother, Betty Rust.
Since the cookbook's distribution, over the years I have used it to find a few of my favorite recipes. While doing so, I perused the pages and found recipes I wanted to try, but never got around to making, or found recipes that made me go hmmmm? I've even read recipes and imagined my husband or kids' reactions and gotten a giggle. Salmon loaf, anyone???
Lately I've found myself looking through the cookbook, thinking about our family traditions, and wanting to connect with my roots through these recipes. I want to impart our family food traditions to my kids, and see if we can find a few new (old) classics to add into the mix. I also want to try some of the more unique recipes and see if they stand the test of time....and my picky eaters!
That's why, in 2018, with the help of my Mom and my Sister, we'll get cooking up some family goodies, share our traditions, and post the recipes for you to try over the next year. From Anise Candy to Zebra Meat, from Burnt Sugar Ice Cream to Washington Pie, we'll give these recipes a go!
We're planning to post a couple times a week, with pics and how to's for the recipes we choose. We look forward to your comments, hopefully about how you tried one of our dishes, or just your thoughts on what we've prepared. Was it a hit or a flop? Or did your family have a similar dish or tradition - we want to hear about it!
Join us for some food, fun, and probably quite a few laughs here at the Blog, and also on Facebook -https://www.facebook.com/rustfamilycookbook2018/ After all, we're all family here, and it's going to be quite the year!

Really nice. I made my second batch of anise candy yesterday. To keep anise flavor, it is important to add the anise flavor after cooking to 300 degrees just before puttng in pan, as the recipe says.. Otherwise the flavor cooks out by time it is the right temp. Your uncle, Kim
